VARA® Skin Underskinning installed on a pontoon or tritoon creates a smooth, aerodynamic surface that significantly improves speed and fuel efficiency while reducing structural noise. Using VARA® Skin instead of traditional aluminum sheets offers a high-strength, lightweight alternative that eliminates the “surging” effect caused by exposed cross-beams.
The Benefits of VARA® Skin vs. Bare Cross-Beams

When a pontoon moves at speed, the space between the toon tubes acts as a wind tunnel.
- Bare Beams: Exposed beams cause interrupted air flow and “surging,” where water splashes up and hits the structural cross-members. This creates significant drag, excessive noise, prevents the boat from achieving a “ground effect” (where air pressure helps lift the boat), and sometimes actually allows water to egress onto the top deck making the deck wet.
- Our fiber-reinforced VARA® Skin , non-corrosive one piece sheet easily creates a streamlined underdeck. It allows the air to flow smoothly underdeck, increasing lift and speed while helping to protect the under structure from water egress. VARA® Skin is an affordable accessory that provides the structural benefits of aluminum underskinning without the heavy weight penalty of aluminum weight, sharp edges, and special tools needed for a proper install allowing your boat to stay lighter on the water and respond better to the lift generated by a VARA® Foil system.

Pontoon Underskinning VARA® Skin
Comparison: VARA® Skin vs. Aluminum Underskinning
For a standard 23-foot pontoon boat, the differences in weight and installation are substantial:
| Feature | VARA® Skin | Aluminum (.032 Sheet) | |||
| Weight | ~13.5 lbs | ~52 lbs | |||
| Material | Fiber-Reinforced Clear PVC | Aluminum Alloy | |||
| Cost | 150 sq ft. = $ 425.00 | 150 sq ft. = + $ 575.00 Based on online metals Part # 7125 quote. | |||
| Corrosion | Completely Non-Corrosive | Susceptible to pitting/oxidation | |||
| Seams | One-piece application | Overlapping sheets (multiple seams) which pop apart | |||
| Transparency | Inspect cable locations, fuel lines,
Critters after winter storage |
Must Drop Separate Sheets for inspection under deck | |||
| Water Egress | Seamless (keeps water out) | Water can enter at every seam | |||
Interaction of VARA® Skin with a VARA® Foil hydrofoil:
![]()
Performance Synergy: When you combine a streamlined underdeck with a hydrofoil, the physics of the boat changes. The VARA® Skin creates a “tunnel effect” that allows air to move smoothly between the hulls, generating a ground effect providing extra lift and efficiency. Without underskinning, air especially as speed increases hits the cross-beams, creating downward drag that actual works against the pontoon with or without a hydrofoil.
Summary of Results
- Speed: The combination of VARA® Skin and VARA® Foil typically yields a 32% min increase in top-end speed by reducing water and air resistance simultaneously. To keep expectations low, PHA, Inc. guarantees a minimum of 25% min speed gain remembering that all pontoon designs are different and therefor respond differently with addition of our efficient speed accessories. However 2 platforms have gained over and above a 100% speed increase to date.
- Fuel Efficiency: Because your boat reaches higher speeds at lower RPMs, you can expect 20-30% min fuel savings while cruising. The general rule: your boat will “cruise” at speeds your old boat did while at maximum engine wear and tear wide open throttle rpm’s.
- Weight Savings: By choosing VARA® Skin over aluminum, you save nearly 40 lbs, which translates to lower “takeoff” speeds for the hydrofoil, and loads on the engine.
